Days after earning a bachelor of science degree at Portland State University, Elizabeth Diaz met a group of sailors who invited her to sail around the world on a 32-foot Cascade sloop. She packed a bag and set sail for a new life at Astoria, Oregon. Sailing past the United States--Mexico border, the sailors cruised back up the west coast to San Francisco. Elizabeth got off the boat at Pier 39. Working days as a corporate headhunter, Elizabeth spent her spare time repairing marine canvases. Moonlighting fed her love for adventure, travel and sailing. In 1988, she quit her day job, rented an industrial sewing machine, and went to work carving out a creative niche. North Beach Marine Canvas became the only shop located in San Francisco specializing in interior designs for 35 x 70-foot sail and power yachts. Elizabeth made a name for herself at local marinas and she began to win awards for her interior designs. Industrial Fabrics Association International certified her a Master Fabric Craftperson in 1993. "I enjoy what I'm doing immensely. Success is a by-product of doing what you like to do." Now North Beach Marine Canvas operates a shop on Pier 40 and Elizabeth has recruited a team of talented craftsmen. Kathyrn Dobbins joined North Beach Marine Canvas five years ago after operating her own business in Washington State for 15 years. Jaime Aviles has 10 years experience as a marine craftsman and has worked for NBMC for seven years. |
